The Institute of Environmental Sciences is an institute of the faculty of Science at Leiden University. The main area of work is research and education in the multidisciplinary field of environmental sciences. The research projects of the Institute draw from natural and social sciences. The Industry Ecology department deals with research in the area of Industrial ecology. A core activity is the development of analytic tools such as LCA, MFA, SFA and their combination into integrated tools such as hybrids. Such tools are useful when making decisions on sustainable production and consumption. This section of the Institute of Environmental Sciences has expertise in the areas of resource scarcity and management as well as renewable energy technologies and agriculture.

The Institute of Industrial Ecology has been involved in numerous projects such as EU FP6 CALCAS (improved sustainability modelling, as scientific coordinator); FP7 CREEA, EMININN and CECILIA regarding renewable energy technologies, macro-environmental indicators and climate polices.
